Sorry I'll try to be more clear.

What I meant by "out of the blue" is that you wont recieve messages through connect unless your account is bumped, and you bump your account by being active and responding to people.

I have probably messaged like 10 people first and that was pretty much all on my first day, every other message I've gotten was someone else opening.

When I want to get more messages I respond to 10 or so of the openers I got that I wasn't interested in, if it's at peak time the account bump usually gets me maybe 10 new openers, and then the people I responded to usually respond back, giving me like +~20 messages total which is how they accumulate.

Out of the new 10 or so that opened I'll usually pick one I like and progress with them, and then leave the rest for the next account bump.

I currently have 211 messages by doing this but a lot of those are double messages or dudes so keep that in mind. Hope that helps.

I don't think the algo would punish for calls but calling doesnt bump your account like messaging does. Spamming people or not getting responses probably fucks u tho.

Idk it depends, I have a decently long convo and then whenver it gets boring I just say call me sometime and we can do language practice, and yeah I pretty much only message during good hours because bumping my account at 4am japan time would be pretty useless.

I'll ask my friends what website people tend to organize through recently. I havent been there since covid.

This was at the beginning of the generative AI era and Stable Diffusion, so maybe people would have a sharper eye for it nowadays.

From the beginning I was paranoid about algorithmic penalties. One thing I thought would hurt me is if I didn't respond to men. So I would often respond to men a few times and then stop. Every action I did on the app was to make myself seem as innocent and normal as possible. There's no way to tell whether it was necessary, but I'd recommend it.

As for OP's heartache dilemma: it might be too late, but consider there's a middle ground between dating your long-term girl and not seeing her at all. Date her. I'm not sure how it works exactly on Tandem, but a couple times girls messaged me, I looked at their profile and see they're 20 minutes away. I do not know if there is a way to search your locality as there is on HelloTalk.

I usually text for 3-7 days, then chat on the phone with them once or twice, then arrange for a meet maybe a couple days after the first phone call. Other times I will arrange the meet first then chat with them on the phone a day or two before we meet in person. This is all about building familiarity and not letting the tension run cold (PUA lingo: always be escalating).

Overall I would say 1-2 weeks from the first message to the first meet. It depends on how quickly each of you reply to each other. Some girls only check the app every couple days which could extend the timeline to 3 weeks.

I think it's a shame they switched honestly—one of the most fascinating aspects of Chinese is obviously in observing the composition of the characters and inferring its meaning based on the radicals, and that was often all but lost in a lot of the so-called simplified characters it seems. And most kanji are closer to traditional as well, which makes it even more easy mode
