I'm going to say no, but the destination countries and dynamics are always in flux.

Consider, for example, I've met guys who back in the 1980s went to Japan with just high school diplomas and made big bucks giving English lessons to salarymen. These guys had pretty Japanese girls throwing themselves at them just because they had money and were a rare commodity. By contrast, nowadays Japanese people are used to seeing foreigners and it's much harder to make a good salary doing TEFL in Japan.

It was around 2000 that you started to see the TEFL guys going to Korea and then after '08 everyone was going to China. Nowadays, the top destination seems to be Vietnam, but I'm sure that'll change too.

That said, probably the biggest shift in geomaxxing has been the rise of remote work. Just 15 years ago such a concept was very rare (limited mostly to freelance journalists and other creative types). This has put the radar on destinations that were previously unfeasible. Consider, for example, Latin America. You can't make a good living teaching EFL in Latin America. The pay is too low and the cost of living is too high. That's why the industry has always been centered in Asia. However, if you can work remotely as a programmer or in IT, then you could live like a king in Medellín or Bogotá.

It's for this reason that I'm optimistic. If you're an educated, professional man, you will be in-demand somewhere. In the West, we pop out guys with these qualities all the time. They're considered "average," but that's not the case everywhere in the world. There are still plenty of countries where just having a high school education, makes you above-average.

I don't know where the next big destination will be, but I am fairly certain that there will always be one.

I seriously think that the next big destinations will be India and Africa. India is an odd one since technically it's considered an "English-speaking country." However, less than 15% of the population actually speaks the language with most of them occupying elite positions. I think that as the Indian middle class continues to swell over the next twenty years that there will be TEFL and other professional opportunities there for educated, English-speaking professionals from the West.

Likewise, I think that Africa will become a more attractive destination over the next 30 years. Much like India, many "English-speaking" parts of Africa don't actually have that high of English proficiency and there are opportunities for Westerners to go their as teachers and technical experts. I've met a lot of bilingual (French/English) engineers and IT professionals who have worked all throughout Africa and I've met Europeans, Americans and Canadians who have gone to supposedly "English-speaking" parts of the continent to teach (whether their native language was English or not).

Truth be told, the world truly is globalizing. Back in the day, all it took for an average guy was to graduate high school and get a job at the local factory. Now that's gone. It's been gone. Offshoring started as far back as the 1970s. The digital revolution as well. Do you think in 1970 people were talking about going to China to make beaucoup bucks and fuck women? They certainly weren't talking about doing that in Vietnam or Africa or India! However, the world has changed and it will continue to change.

You have to have a passport from one of these seven countries to work in South Korea, China or Japan.

However, I once met a dude from Ghana who was teaching English in Mexico City. He told me that he went there because he knew he stood no chance getting a visa in Asia even though English was his native language and he had studied in the UK. Moreover, he could make a Hell of a lot more money there than he ever could in Ghana.

I think about this a lot. The Ghanian guy who guys to Mexico to teach English, the Mexican student who goes to Thailand to study tropical medicine, the Filipino who goes to Turkey to work in a hotel . . . .

Immigration used to be defined by people going from the Global South to the "First World." That's not the way it is anymore. There is a powerful current of people moving from one developing country to the next. That's the future. The poor countries of the world will work hard to make themselves part of it while the rich countries will begrudgingly be absorbed by it.
