I very much looked forward to this trip, yet it seems that Shanghai isn't a geomaxxing location in 2025. We've already heard from several members that it's not an easy city but I wanted to see it myself.

Despite taking the busiest subway lines every day (1, 2, 8) and visiting the most famous places, I don't recall even one girl looking at me. Some scammers on East Nanjing Road offered to have some "tea" or "drinks" but it obviously doesn't count.

Interestingly enough, some guys stared at me from the moment I arrived at the airport, which I assume was due to my height. I had a girlfriend from the Shanghai region in the past, so I expected something different from this experience.

I went somewhere else and enjoy my time there.

Have you been at bars and clubs? Or even just dating apps....China is the easiest place for me to date quality girls. I also dated European girls in China and it's much easier to date them when they're in China, than when they're in Europe.
I'm average looking, not a male model. I've been there recently and I'll be there again in June because I have some girls to meet

You are not a white Htn if you are not stared at in China. Even I as a white Htn with 5 ft 9 had girls approach me and saying I look handsome in Shanghai

this is contradictive in itself already.

60 likes in half a day means there is huge potential.

i get like 1 bumble like a day in germany in winter... but that being said, at least the conversation is a lot better than in china. if you manage to get likes in europe, chances for a date are reasonably high. in china they often don't speak any english and don't reply.
 
The point is this: you will have matches on Bumble but you are much more likely to have JBW superstar status in another Chinese city. They are already pretty accustomed to laiwai, so being one isn’t that special in Shanghai.

Tbh you could be right, i’ve met Chinese girls from Shanghai here in Manchester, and they never really found me that attractive or appealing whilst me being Htn and tall..

Also, you left out some important details about your pheno, specifically your coloration/pigmentation and your age, which would most significantly impact your appearance and how you’re perceived there…

not good indicator because girls in china from jbs to milfs stared at me, made conversation in the streets, asked for pics and i’m ltn

same in korea in 2024 where there’s been heavy looksflation. that really surprised me having girls saying i could model considering im manlet. prob just gaslighting festizhers
 
@Xavist: I visited pretty much all the things that needed to be visited (The Bund, Yu Garden, Tianzifang among other places), so I wasn’t motivated to stay in Shanghai and spend my time talking on dating apps.

JBW basically means it should require little effort to be successful. I’m happy to dedicate some time to it if required, but not in a city where I feel invisible. I should try another Chinese city in the future as I like the vibe in the country, but SH became too westernized.

OP seems to be judging Shanghai based on superficial observations, like the amount of attention he gets on the street, compliments on his laowai-ness, etc. This is actually a good indicator for how dating can be. Obviously he could have had a good deal of success if he stayed in Shanghai for longer and put more effort into using the various dating apps, learning the social landscape, making connections, etc. But it seems like he's just surveying the JBW factor. Which there is almost none of in Shanghai.

This is an example of how nebulous a term like JBW is. We really need new terminology, or to clarify it better. To some JBW is just the factor of whiteness or ethnic background on SMV. This is not how he's referring to it. He's using the "old" JBW terminology of "white is all you need", something that doesn't exist in Asia anymore outside of rural Philippines and possibly places like Laos, Mongolia, and other developing areas with minimal expat presence.

I think 60 likes a day qualifies for success. its way too many women to talk to,but there are ways to filter for women who are dtf if you are good at running texting game.

there's no reson out of 60 likes a day he shouldn't get getting one or two dates at least a day, even if they are not putting him on a pedestal

I live in Shanghai, and the places you mentioned aren’t ideal to meet girls. These places are just tourist traps filled with out of town Chinese tourists. The bund has some rooftop hotels bar/clubs, but these parties usually have many foreigners, so again there’s no JBW boost at all.

Anyway there’s plenty of foreigners in Shanghai, including models, so people are accustomed to them and there really isn’t much of JBW halo here. The level at which JBW works basically is ltb/mtb girls, which is what 90% of foreigners are dating. But for the actual high level girls, other factors will come in to play such as mogger looks, money, status , elite education etc.

But still your results on bumble were decent, so you easily could have converted some of those matches into lays. The girls here on dating apps can be pretty high quality, and they are more eager and available to meet off dating apps compared to say Tokyo, where the quality of girls on apps is lower than irl. Basically if you can put in more time here, you should be able to get a good number of slays and fwbs. And of course the quality of girls in Shanghai is the highest in China overall, because there’s girls from all provinces of China here, as it’s the most attractive city for Chinese to live in.

Good take on JBW. Don't mean to hijack this thread away from China but there was a time "exotic factor" supposedly worked in CE/EE. This was from the early 2010s when RooshV traveled there. When I came around to CE/EE, I've come to learn that this exotic factor applied to LTBs and MTBs at best. For the HTNs and up, you gotta have your shit together even back then.

I don't know you personally but I think this feeling is mostly a meme. Everyone feels horrible when they're in a nightlife establishment where they don't fit in or know anyone. Especially large clubs. I was no different. Fact is when you frequent a place long enough you get to know the bartenders, regular customers, and just get a better feel for the venue. You become "at home" there and can use that confidence to your advantage. Just like a NEET feels at home in front of his computer in his mom's basement, that same feeling can be realized in any social venue. It doesn't require you to be particularly extroverted or normie.
 
@Rance: Thanks for giving some hope regarding nightlife, although it wasn't particularly enjoyable when I tried it in the west. I might get the confidence to do it again thanks to makeup.

Haha, your results are pretty good though, I’d say regular normies would get like 10-15 likes max a day. So if you stay for like a month or two, you will definitely have good success here, and the quality of girls here can be really high.
But yeah the JBW superstar treatment is not gonna happen here, I guess Philippines and Indonesia are the only places where that’s happening these days.
 
@marauder: I admit coming across a Reddit post where a laowai got 120 likes before even arriving in Shanghai. I was like shit, some random non-looksmaxxed Redditor seems to be more successful, which was one of the reasons I wasn't motivated to keep using Bumble

Update: I had to transfer through another province and I ordered a drink in the international section, waiting for my flight. After a few minutes and a quick chat, the HTB bartender told me I’m very handsome and asked for my socials, “do you have a gf” and such. Gave her a small gift, she was happily humming around. I had to leave right after

Notable event because she seems to serve many laowai each day.

Fuck, how do I catch up after years of neglect? I don't have friends to take photos of me and post party pics. Can I just post nature pics and selfies? My sister told me that selfies are a red flag because it shows a lack of friends.
