Friend wants to join me to visit China and also slay and enjoy the night life.
What are the must-do cities according to you ?
Should we stick to Beijing/Shanghai ? Or should we go more to inner China (Chongqing / Chengdu) ? Or maybe the South (Guangzhou / Shenzhen / Fuzhou / HK / Macao)
Advice from fellow chinacels and geomaxxers would be highly appreciated !

From similar thread, your best bet is Beijing and Shanghai.

Get HelloTalk, Tinder, TanTan. I think HelloTalk will be very good for you since you at a chinese university so that should garner attention.

I am not in China yet but I do know quite a bit about it already. We need more detail.
  • Are you visiting, studying, or working?
  • How old are you, roughly?
  • Do you speak Mandarin? If not, do you intend to learn?
I'm a little confused because you said "visit" but SM55 suggested you were at a university.

Replace TanTan with Bumble and Tandem; then you have a good list lol
Also Shenzhen and Guangzhou will be better than Beijing now with the weather…

If I'm not mistaken I saw post saying he was going to China for his studies? His other post suggest his doesn't speak Mandarin but is trying to learn.

my first city in china was xiamen and i was a bit dissapointed by how it looks, like mix of asia and post comunist eastern europe, its grey and dirty with constant fog even tho it has pretty decent aqi most of the time. noone speaks english, taxi drivers were driving away from me after first step to their direction, airport security had to stop some taxi for me and explain direction to driver because he couldn't even comprehend chinese hotel name and chinese address i showed him on my phone, unbeliveable shit
i must admit chinese people love whites. some chinese dude wanted to help me with taxi at the airport but he had no clue either but i appreciate effort. first day chinese girl i spoke with for like a week came to me and took me to her apartment, she showed me apps for everything and it became pretty easy

china is hardest country ive ever been but thats actually the point of geomaxing, to overcome shit like this and struggle in new culture. you can't sit in bangkok and order food, girls and weed without leaving your condo forever

similar experience with my first time in china also being in xiamen

was approached by a sichuan girl within an hour of me landing at the airport which sparked the idea to explore the country more

i took a bus to the city tho after some chink guy helped me out despite not speaking english

but the downtown area looks good. the mainland part of the city is mostly just industrial areas and universities

but yes it’s important to go to places that challenge you

That's great, in that case you should take your pick of any of the T1 cities except for Shanghai and Beijing. I guess the other factor I forgot to ask about is money.

Shanghai is incredibly expensive in every sense but especially in rent. Your dollar will not go nearly as far. Girls will be richer and harder to impress. You will have to budget more, live in a smaller and more distant apartment, and sacrifice opportunities for budget reasons... all this unless you have a big pile of money to spend. Every other city, especially T1.5s like Chongqing, are much more affordable and still rife with opportunity. Obviously I'm a bit biased on this one though, some people would much rather live in the highly cosmopolitan and sophisticated Shanghai even if they can't be big spenders. It is also the only city in the country (+ Hong Kong) where you can actually use English and get away with poor Mandarin.

Beijing seems kind of ass from everything I've read on it. It's the second or third most expensive city in China (cheaper than Shanghai, similar to Shenzhen) but its local governance is very CCP with all the tight controls such an administration brings. It seems very culturally muted. I wouldn't choose it over any other T1 or T1.5.

My recommendation would be Chengdu or Chongqing, probably in that order. You're going to have to buckle down in learning Mandarin or else daily life will be a struggle and you'll be locked out of >80% of dating opportunities. Just like Japan or Korea, girls do speak English and are excited to speak it with you, but it's a give-and-take thing where you need the local language to fall back on as a safety blanket for her. I would recommend getting to at LEAST HSK1 level before touching down in China.

Okay thank you for recommandations. I’ve just arrived today and started to learn mandarin. I am in China for 4 months so I guess I will be able to get to HSK1 before the end and use it for dating.
I’ll def go to Chengdu but I am based in Suzhou for my University (which is a T2 City right ?).
Are you currently also in China ?

Ahh I get it now, you'll live in Suzhou no matter what but you're asking about which cities you want to visit as a tourist while studying in Suzhou. It's actually a T1.5 city but it might as well be a suburb of Shanghai. You're in a good spot. Have fun.

As for me, I'm not in China right now, at this point I think I'll be arriving in September. I originally planned to begin this February but I want to build up more money and learn more Mandarin before I drop.

I read another one your posts that you're going to a french business school in Suzhou?
If it's the one that I'm thinking of, I actually went to the uni right next to it , I know a few people that went to that same business school but it was a few years back right before covid. Apparently a lot as changed since covid, mostly for the worse, but if you want to know anything about the lay of the land or spots to go to feel free to ask.
