That is one thing jakarta is awesome for. No "foreign prices" you see 25k for a bowl of chicken soup, thats what it is mother fucker. no matter what your skin color. cambodia. not so much.

If you are eating cheap in Taiwan, it's unlikely you'll encounter anyone who is willing to communicate in English. Taiwanese are proud of their education; it seems they either speak English fluently, or they refuse to speak a single word of English to avoid the possibility of embarrassing themselves in front of a foreigner.

Cheap eateries in Taiwan offer bare-bones customer service in any case. It's all about moving food into bellies as efficiently as possible. You pick up the laminated menu at the counter, seat yourself, mark your selection with the marker provided, then hand the menu to the staffer as she hurries around doing her job. theres many SEA countries with weird and/or stupid laws and in practice dont matter a lot
