My good friend is from Cavite and he tells me about this all the time. 20 years ago the Philippines was a very different place. Gangs were rampant. Police were extremely corrupt, forming "toll booths" on the highways to shake people down, taking bribes to solve crimes, etc. Gang members were quasi-police and the actual police were quasi-gang members. Everything was "pay to be safe".

According to my friend, Duterte cracked down on all of this really hard with extreme punishments for any form of corruption. Now the country is very different, especially from a police perspective.

Not even just Manila....I went to major shithole in the middle of nowhere....places like Dumaguete, Iloilo, Davao ecc and nothing ever happened to me even if I walked around alone at night. Just don't be an idiot flashing expensive things and don't try to pick fights with local people.

The real danger in the Philippines is the food, it's beyond terrible and it's often contaminated because their sanitary processing is non existent.
