Yea American officer. Not worth it for 1 stint there's a ton of credentialing and training you have to do. If you want to just do it for the experience get your passport, MMC, TWIC, and try to get a harbor gig. Search "tugboat deckhand" jobs.
4 year university degree to become an officer. Maybe a couple months if you want to be unlicensed. I'm not sure about the cost, most people I know join a union and the union will pay for the classes.
IMO it's not worth sailing unless you are an officer or work in the Engine Department with a technical background (eg Electrician). The unlicensed deckhand type jobs don't pay well, are extremely physically gruelling, and are quite dangerous.
