It depends where you go in mainland china, it’s huge. @AlexBrown84 is the undeniable china expert. I think if you’re just travelling and you want something casual though, then HK would be your best bet as you can speak English and they’re more open to foreigners right off the bat

Get an ESim before arriving then you don’t need to use a vpn.

Also get a physical sim with local number at the airport or in the city.

Alipay works with foreign number, you just need to verify your id with your passport.

You can add foreign cards to your Alipay account, visa/Mastercard works, but they don’t take Amex.

trip is generally fine

never had a hotel in china that was on trip refuse me

however have tried walking into a hotel once and being refused cuz i was foreigner

they’re too lazy to do the report
