I agree but I'd flip this on its head and say it's the Western people who are weird, not the Asians. Basically turbo-normie culture in the West (especially North America) encourages a very narrow selection of acceptable hobbies and interests.

I would say anime is probably the shining example in Japan, but it's not a great example, because anime has developed its own kind of turbo-normie culture in Japan. I've felt outcasted because I didn't know a character from ju jutsu kaizen or whatever the fuck that anime was.

Exactly. East Asia is very accomodating to introverts. If you feel like strangers in the US feel fake, you don’t know what you’re missing. Customs in China like people basically having little concept of personal space, not beating around the bush talking about things like finances, someone being fat, or stuff like generally not doing ‘little favors’ like, idk, holding doors open for strangers or whatever is honestly such a relief and makes one less self-conscious. People say it’s an NPC hivemind but sometimes I think it’s the opposite
