I regret starting college. I only enrolled to get a degree so I could disappear overseas and teach English, but now it just feels like another obligation weighing me down. Deadlines feel like a burden. I just wanna be free again.

Maybe I should just see it as my ticket out of here.

Definitely doesnt seem like a great place to settle in long term as Vietnamese women are too conservative and most arent interested in non asian guys by many accounts. Plus their language seems god awful to learn and makes Mandarin sound angelic by comparison.

SEA languages are absolutely awful. Vietnamese and Thai are easily the worst sounding languages in the world. The only Asian languages that sound nice are Japanese and Indonesian, imo.

depends on the time of the year. air pollution in hanoi is worst in winter. also there’s constant noise pollution too. i’ve spent around 6 months the last 2 years in various cities

nah the girls are easy in hanoi and saigon. other cities too but less english speakers. i was even approached by a viet girl on a train in hue

Viet girls are cute and da Nang air quality seemed pretty good, no worse than Thailand , china or other parts of Asia. And walking infrastructure is on par with Thailand but ya the noise pollution is unbearable especially the fucking karaoke, and it’s much dirtier than Thailand too

If you're from the US there are several countries around the world wanting your FAFSA-bucks. Pick one and do your degree there. https://studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/international-schools-in-federal-loan-programs.pdf Many schools also have international campuses. For example, Arkansas State has a campus in Querétaro, MX, Temple University has campuses in Tokyo and Osaka, Duke University and NYU are in Shanghai, and Kean University is in Wenzhou. Likewise, if you're British, the University of Nottingham, Hariot-Watt University, and Liverpool University have campuses in Asia while Australians can take advantage of Monash, Curtin and Swinburne's campuses in Malaysia, Singapore and China. I'm sure there are others but you'll have to do your own research.

On a related note, if you really just want a degree for visa purposes, there are accelerated online degrees that you can finish in 1-2 years. Western Governors University (US and Canadian citizens only) has a multitude of self-paced degrees and are very affordable (I know a lot of other teachers who got degrees there). South College, University of the People, and American University of Education (Yeah, I know, shit name. Still good.) are accredited and do the same thing. Most importantly, they're dirt cheap. You could probably self-finance.

Also, piece of advice, and I really mean this, the best way to learn how to teach is by teaching. It's also the fastest way to find out if you actually like teaching. Maybe look into some opportunities to volunteer with agencies or on WorkAway. In any case, I'd far sooner take a candidate with experience, no matter how unconventional, and a non-traditional degree over one with all of the bells and whistles, but no experience.

In any case, college is silly and, with the exception of the global elite for whom costs are negligible, by-and-large certifications have come to trump degrees anyway. I'm telling you, nobody in education cares where you got your degree, fancy-pants private schools excluded. Your certifications and experience are way more important. Just get the degree as cheaply and quickly as possible.
