In all big cities the city center is pretty cool and I would actually see myself live there, jog around the beautiful buildings and go into the luxurious malls, but whenever you get further from the ultra rich city centers it feels really dogshit with not a single decent house in sight, a number of dilapidated buildings that spoil the sight and overall ugly architecture.

ive rode over thousands of kilometers across china via train and seen some pretty depressing places

For a long time I thought China was way more developed than it actually is because the Chinese people I speak with are all from Tier 1/New Tier 1 cities. When they show me pictures of areas outside of these cities, the country looks very dystopian.

Kinda true but it doesn't have to be the CENTER. Plenty of very nice looking districts in the suburbs in the major cities like Beijing

Is it true that small 'towns' in South Korea will sometimes have like random skyscraper/apartment buildings in the middle of nowhere and then almost nothing else

not really. the only city that comes close to that is around Sejong where the new government capital is. pretty empty when i biked through it

most of the countryside is either rice fields or mountains
