All the apartments I’ve seen seem to require at least a 1 year contract; should I look at AirB&B’s or cheap hotels instead?

Yes, they are? The prices for renting an apartment for 1 month in Bangkok is actually pretty good considering there's no tenancy contract. You only pay like 10 or 20% more per month.

Airbnb is completely legal to use in Thailand. What's illegal is, an owner renting out a residential flat for less than 30 days. If you as a tourist are caught, or reported to the police, you can theoretically face a hefty fine.
