FWIW, there are two types of bars in Bangkok; resto-bars that Thais visit with a group of friends to eat, drink and socialize around a table...and bars with stools, lone foreign guys, painted-up girls, lady drinks, and so on.
If you want to drink like a working-class Thai, the little shops with a beer fridge have a few chairs outside where you can sit and drink your bottle of Chang or Leo after 5 PM. Sometimes Chang is sold for 55 baht, sometimes 60 or 62 (7-Eleven charges 59). Of course you will be left alone; Thai propriety frowns upon trying to make small talk with strangers. It's one of the things I love most about this country. I can walk around with a smug look and a measured step, and the Thais like it. They don't think "oh, what a stuck-up prick", or "what's wrong with you, why are you always alone, why don't you smile".
