It depends on the person traveling. Do you know how to travel without losing a lot of your money along the way? Do you generally know how to get things done in new places? I've traveled with a little over 10k USD and I've also traveled internationally with zero money, living like a bum.

living like a bum is more fun most of the times. also requires you to be more creative
Yeah, some of the best times in my life were when I've hit rock bottom and had nobody else to rely on. You live differently from that point on until you've pulled yourself out of that situation. I love the way my mind comes alive in those times. Small victories and living day to day.

I had a stretch where I had ZERO liquid money (the end of my stint in Japan) and it was not a good experience. Yes, my mind came alive with ways to get money, but I'd rather have not had those thoughts. I viscerally remember comparing the prices of instant ramen at the 7/11 to find the cheapest ones... fuck that.
