How does a tourist visa to Thailand work?

You need to apply online for the E visa.

That will give you 60 days.

You then extend once you're out there for an extra 30 days to get 90. You can either go to the immigration and do it all yourself, or pay an agency to make it easier.

Yeah I was trying to figure out what I needed to do and had bank statements and a return flight and a hotel booked and stuff and they didn't give a shit they just took a picture of me and stamped my passport. Meanwhile all the curries in line were getting interrogated JFL. JBW strikes again.
