From my casual observations over the past several years, I believe this controversy originates from the Bolsonaro movement where he won an upset victory and bucked the trend of socialist rule in Brazil. He lost re-election and refused to concede, but was ultimately forced from office. Since re-gaining control of the government, the socialists have used the government to suppress the activities of the Bolsonaro movement. The most recent action has been to ban X and Rumble in Brazil for refusing to de-platform Brazilian Bolsonaro activists. Further, they made using a VPN to access these websites highly illegal, with fines of an average yearly Brazilian salary per hour for using a VPN.
